Female Health & Fertility is a quarterly digital magazine and online hub created to support women and non-binary people who are affected by gynecological and reproductive issues. Its magazine content focuses on all stages of the reproductive cycle, from young adults to post-menopausal folks and its features are written by gynecologists, clinicians, therapists, nutritionists, researchers, and also readers who are sharing their lived experiences.
I write a column called ‘Pleasure Principles with Almaz’, which appears in the digital magazine each issue. I also publish it in full here for ‘She Dares To Say’ readers.

Period intimacy: how to stay comfortable and connected
Menstruation often comes with a range of emotions and physical sensations, but it doesn't have to be a barrier to your sex life. In fact, many find that it can help partners tap in to a more primal side of life closer, giving them an opportunity to embrace the natural aspects of the body and deepen their connection. Here are some tips for having comfortable and satisfying intimate moments during menstruation.
1. Open Communication: The Foundation of Comfort
Communication is key. Discussing comfort levels and preferences with your partner can ease any anxieties and ensure both are on the same page. Honesty about your feelings, boundaries, and any physical discomfort will help create a safe space for intimacy.
2. Prepare the Environment
Creating a clean and comfortable environment can significantly enhance the experience. Consider putting down dark-coloured towels, extra bedsheets or a waterproof ‘splash banket’ to protect surfaces and make cleaning up easier. This simple step can alleviate worries about mess, allowing you both to focus on each other.
3. Embrace the Shower
Shower intimacy can be a refreshing and less messy option. The warm water can help soothe menstrual cramps while providing a clean space. Plus, it offers an opportunity for playful and sensual moments without concern for mess.
4. Opt for Comfortable Positions
Certain positions can be more comfortable and less messy. Side-by-side or spooning positions can minimise the flow of blood and offer a relaxing, intimate experience. Experiment to find what feels best for both of you.
5. Use Menstrual Products
Internal menstrual products, like tampons or menstrual cups, can reduce mess. They can be left in place during foreplay and non-penetrative activities. Remember to remove them before any penetrative sex to avoid discomfort or health risks.
6. Focus on Foreplay
Menstrual intimacy doesn’t have to centre around penetration. Focus on other forms of intimacy such as kissing, touching, or oral sex. This can be incredibly satisfying and help deepen your emotional connection.
7. Stay Hygienic
Good hygiene is really important. Both partners should wash their hands before and after intimate activities to maintain cleanliness and reduce the risk of minor infections like urinary tract infections (UTIs) and bacterial vaginosis (BV), which can occur when bacteria gets into the urethra and/or vagina . Keep tissues, wet wipes or a warm, damp washcloth nearby for quick clean-ups.
8. Listen to Your Body
Your comfort and health are crucial. If you’re feeling fatigued, experiencing severe cramps, or simply not in the mood, it’s perfectly okay to skip intimate activities. Listen to your body and communicate your needs to your partner.
9. Take Advantage of Increased Sensitivity
Many women experience heightened sensitivity during their period, which can enhance pleasure. This can be a great time to explore and enjoy different sensations.
Embracing intimacy during menstruation can be a unique and rewarding experience. With open communication, and a little prep you can navigate this natural part of life with confidence and care, turning it into an opportunity for deeper connection and enjoyment.
📢 Exciting news! I’m officially adding another arm to my professional offering. 🎉
After continuously receiving unsolicited comments from fashion people asking whether I’d “ever considered modelling”, I’m pleased to announce that I finally got my act together and spent some time earlier this year shooting for my portfolio.
