Season 4 of She Dares To Say has now ended. Since September 2025, it has followed a rotating schedule of content:
‘It Stuck With Me’
Autobiographical vignettes capturing the moments from my life that remain etched in my memory.
‘Considering My Crushes’
A returning favourite! Essays describing celebrity/public eye/fictional crushes along with imagery. These posts are mainly guest essays by writers in my community.
‘Relationship Status: Unfiltered’
A bold interview series speaking to people across the spectrum of romantic and sexual experience, from high school sweethearts and solo polyamorists, to swingers, co-parents, serial monogamists and asexual folk. Each conversation follows the same of questions, revealing what people really think about love, commitment, dating and desire; from the inside of these relationships themselves.
As usual, I’m taking a break from publishing new creative content now that I’ve come to the end of the season. But this time round, I’m not going to pause paid subscribers while the project is on hiatus. This is so that people can still upgrade to access full length pieces (i.e. the content beyond the paywall) in the ‘It Stuck With Me’ series, all of the paywalled POSTSCRIPT posts, and the full archive (170 posts and counting!) of this Substack.
I’m also keeping the paid subscriptions option open so that anyone who discovering the newsletter for the first time can sign up and immediately access the full archive.
The Substack platform lets existing paid subscribers pause their subscription whenever they like, so if any of you paid subscribers would prefer to take a break while this newsletter is on hiatus, you can easily do that, too 😃.
Portfolio Showcase
Outside of Substack, I’m a multi-disciplinary writer and creative working across journalism, branding and sexuality education.
You can visit my Work With Almaz page, for more information. And I’m dropping some of my recent work below.
Anti-racism work
In the Spring, I co-facilitated the Manchester cohort of Black Lives Matter UK Project Timbuktu.
[Image description: Illustrated scene depicting a large protest calling for reparations and racial justice in bold colourways]
The free, eight-week radical political education course is designed to equip folks with tools, theory, and networks to advance Black Liberation. We explored radical Black traditions in Britain, the global Black Struggle and what abolition could look like in action ✊🏾
If you need culturally grounded workshops/talks around race, identity, belonging or equity get in touch!
Journalism
I recently became a contributing writer at Visible Voices magazine, a new publication that aims to shift the perspective on disabilities by creating a new narrative through the lenses of fashion, beauty, art, design and photography.
[Image description: Collage of four screenshots of Almaz’s features on the Visible Voices magazine website]
So far, I’ve written:
– ‘The Performance of Hearing: Pole Dancing With Hearing Aids’
– ‘The creative craft of modern prosthetics’
– ‘The art of description: who gets to access images?’
– ‘This disability pride catwalk is reclaiming fashion as a space for disabled visibility’
Almaz note:
For me, working on these types of features is a return to the kinds of writing I was doing at the very beginning of my career. When I was still an English undergrad and found myself writing for publications online, (mainly one called ‘AGENT2’, which I mentioned in these mailouts: ‘#96: It Stuck With Me – No. 08’, ‘POSTSCRIPT: May 2026’ and ‘#100: BONUS: Interview – It Stuck With Me’), where I would cover fashion and art shows, including one with styling and make-up and accessibility influencer Tess Daly. And then, once I’d moved to London and qualified as a Journalist in 2012, the very first feature I sold to a print magazine was an ‘As Told To…’ interview with an amputee model.
It’s made me chuckle how I’ve come full circle. Turns out, I’ve always been interested in how we’re seen in the world and how we participate within it. And, as it turns out, I’ve got a hearing issue myself – Auditory Processing Disorder (APD) – which has a disabling effect in that I often can’t decode speech very well. In office settings, I wear my Hidden Disabilities Sunflower lanyard (although I still have to ask people to repeat themselves a million times a day, as I’ve not caught what they are saying 😅)
If you, (or someone you know or follow) is disabled/differently-abled and working in the creative industries, feel free to get in touch, as I’m always looking for fresh stories about artists, designers, makers, writers and creatives to feature.
Speaking Gigs
Back in May, I was on a panel with long-time friend and collaborator, Barbara Edem Ntumy at the inaugural Platform Ideas event.
We had an honest discussion delving into why casual touch and spontaneous interactions are so important in society, how it brings us sense of warmth and fulfilment when we have it in our everyday interactions and why we might be a little shy leaning in to it, despite the benefits.
Watch my showreel highlighting the work I do within the intimacy pleasure, intimacy and sex ed sectors below.
I’m available to chat on panels, podcasts, radio and TV segments, etc.
Pleasure and intimacy product testing and reviewing
I’m a huge advocate for accessing pleasure and have reviewed many consumer products. I’ve been writing for SEXTECHGUIDE, where reviews from writers all follow the same editorial standard so that readers can compare across the site. The key things we write about are: product build/material quality, ergonomics, performance, controls, battery and charging, waterproof claims and app behaviour.
Here’s my latest one:
– ‘LELO Switch review: two motors, one frustrating auto-shutoff’
My archive of reviews (which honours the complexity of people’s real sexual experiences, not just the marketing claims) for media outlets can be found under the ‘Product Reviews’ tab on the ‘Journalism’ page on my almazohene.com website.
If you’re working with a sex tech company and have new products launching, feel free to reach out.
Creative Copywriting
I work part-time at Oxfam GB as a Creative Copywriter.
I’ve spent the last few weeks working on an Instagram takeover for one of our campaigns. A graphic designer and I worked together to produce this visually arresting content series on the OxfamGB and OxfamFestivals Instagram accounts.
[Image description: Smartphone mock-up displaying the Instagram profile page for OxfamGB. The first nine posts on the profile grid form a single typographic collage spelling out the campaign message ‘NO MORE RADIO SILENCE’]
The ‘No More Radio Silence’ campaign carousel collage on Instagram is part of a wider initiative calling on people to turn up, tune in and speak out about the world’s hidden humanitarian crises in Sudan and South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Yemen and Palestine.
